A Great Summer Non-alcoholic Beverage

{click on image to enlarge}

With the temperatures heating up, everyone is looking for that go-to cocktail that is refreshing during the summertime heat. Me2Roo found this non-alcoholic cocktail on Baby Zone that has us wanting a getaway with one in hand! The crisp cucumber mixed with cranberry juice is just want we need for those blistering summer days. So, let’s get mixing!

To Make a Sophisticated Lady:

Mix a teaspoon each of salt and sugar in a saucer. Wet the rim of a wine or martini glass and press the rim of glass into the sugar and salt. Then, add ice to the glass. In a separate glass (or bowl), muddle the cucumber with a sprinkle of salt. Add that to a shaker of ice with the cranberry juice, simple syrup, and lime juice. Shake well, pour into prepared glass, and enjoy!

Dressing Up Your Baby Bump on Halloween!

Halloween is coming up, and there is one question on every pregnant woman’s mind…”Am I even allowed to dress up this year?” I’m here to tell you that the answer is an emphatic YES! Why let your baby bump get in the way of one of the most fun holidays of the year? And there are so many creative ways to dress it up that you will not even consider going without a costume. Many of your typical Halloween stores even sell some of their most common costumes in maternity styles…so you can go as your typical witch, angel, devil, or even a cheerleader, depending on your personal style. However, there are some women who don’t choose to ignore their baby bump on Halloween. They flaunt it instead! As it turns out, your growing belly can make for a very creative costume itself! Paint it as a pumpkin, a globe, a baseball, or pretty much any other round thing you can think of. On Halloween, CELEBRATE your pregnant body just like on any other day!

Using the baby bump to advocate world peace...cute and creative!

The Chicest Advice from Doubletake Consignment Shop

Whether you’re in the market for some simple and chic maternity staples, eclectic designer pieces to accent your pre or post-bump wardrobe, or searching for the all-important push gift to celebrate the birth of your little bundle, Doubletake Consignment will fulfill your most particular needs. Your experience shopping there will carry you in a whirlwind from Prada shifts to Burberry trenches, all packed up neatly in a stunning Louis Vuitton suitcase.

Doubletake Consignment has been in business for over twenty years with locations in Englewood, Red Bank, Ridgewood and Short Hills, New Jersey. I stopped in last week to pick the brain of Kara M., Director of Operations on the essentials of consignment shopping while pregnant!

Maggie @ Me2Roo: What are some of the designer pieces featured at Doubletake that would be perfect for an expectant mom?

Gorgeous Philip Lim dress perfect for an expectant mom!

Kara @ Doubletake: Tory Burch – caftan pieces and DVF wrap dresses. Both styles are so iconic. They work well in a variety of circumstances so whether you are pregnant, or you have just had a child and are trying to lose the baby weight, the styles are very forgiving. I’m also very fond of St. John and their knit pant to accommodate a growing belly.

Maggie @ Me2Roo: Why is consignment shopping the perfect FIT for your expanding wardrobe?

A timeless Prada perfect for any stage of a mother's journey!

Kara @ Doubletake: When coming to a consignment shop you are not getting maternity clothes so the hope is you can wear them for a significant time afterwards. The craftsmanship and material of high end designer pieces allow them to wear really well.

Maggie @ Me2Roo: I would think Doubletake would have some great PUSH PRESENTS – any recommendations?

Kara @ Doubletake: We have an amazing selection of jewelry that is always a hit for new moms. Everything ranging from David Yurman to Tiffany to Chanel. The Judith Leiber Panda handbag is very special. And of course, gift certificates are always a hit!

Maggie @ Me2Roo: Whether you’re pre-bump or post-bump, what is your number one shopping tip?

Kara @ Doubletake: Dress well. Do whatever you can to help yourself along as you and your body goes through a transformation.  Find a more creative way in dressing…maybe you utilize accessories more.

Thank you to everyone at Doubletake for pulling together these stunning looks! What would I do without my second home!! Shop online at www.edoubletake.com.

Interview with Flywheel’s Candee McAloon!

My morning ritual can be summarized by a single word: torq {Flywheel’s distinctive term to measure resistance}

If you’re familiar with the heart-pumping indoor-cycling better known as Flywheel Sports you know when you hear the word torq.  How you measure exertion is up to you. These challenging spinning workouts provide instant spark; feel your legs start to tap, your inner DJ begins to groove and your competitive mojo starts to kick in.

Supermom Candee McAloon!

Fitness guru Candee McAloon is the tour de force behind Flywheel. A spinning class led by Candee energizes my spirit… my legs ache for more and my mind considers getting a part-time DJ gig.

Candee’s strength, determination, and motivation are unrelenting…even after a day of all-out exertion at work. I sat down with Candee to talk about how exactly she manages to do it all and she should be an inspiration to all of us!

Maggie: You are a vision of fitness Candee. How did you manage to stay so fit throughout your two pregnancies?

Candee: Thank you, Maggie, for saying that.  With the consent of my physician, I continued my exercise routine and never let down (except for the last few weeks).  My doctor actually informed me that maintaining the same workout schedule was very beneficial for my health, as well as the baby’s.  That was all I needed to hear!!!  I always say, “mind over matter”.  I did not let the nausea and tiredness stop me.  I would go to the gym with bagels and crackers…just in case.  Staying in shape helped me feel good throughout my pregnancy and feeling good kept me motivated to keep it up.

Maggie: Indoor spinning is a huge rage and I’m loving it! What attracted you to this incredible work out?

Candee: I have always loved to workout and look for new and exciting ways to challenge myself.   The moment I saw a spin class I thought…I HAVE TO TRY THAT!!!  I feel like it’s me and the bike against the world.  The ride is what you make of it…along with the help of a great instructor, of course.  I never thought I would be the teacher, but look at me now.  I love sharing what I feel and my passion for spinning with the class when I ride.  As you know, I just recently finished my treatments for breast cancer.  Taking and teaching classes really helped me stay positive and strong through the whole process.  Getting on that bike is like therapy.  It really works for the mind and body.   I am here for my class and my goal is to have them get an awesome workout.  The energy is ridiculous and when I see my class sweating and pushing themselves, I know I am doing my job right.

Maggie: With over 40% of pregnant women working out during their pregnancy, why is Flywheel the ultimate platform in staying fit pre-bump to post-bump?

Candee: Flywheel cycling is a non-impact activity which is perfect when you are months into your pregnancy. It’s rare to find an all out cardio format that doesn’t require impact. At Flywheel, the instructors use the technology that only Flywheel has to let riders control their Torq (resistance) and speed to choreograph the class. The instructors are extensively trained to use these tools to let all riders get a great, effective workout in just 45 minutes.

Post-baby, FlyBarre is the way to go. Using body weight and/or light hand weights, it’s a way to start to build core strength again without over doing it during the post weeks. It brings back the toning and sculpting of the body and focuses on the entire body head to toe. It’s also non impact and has the movement and flow of a dance class to get you moving again. The stretches inspired by yoga classics is perfect for everyone to feel great after class.

I feel that if you maintain your “Flywheel” workout during pregnancy, you will have an easier time getting back to your pre-pregnancy weight.  If pregnancy has you a little tired and unmotivated, a Flywheel class will get you right back to where you need to be.  The instructors are all fantastic and the music pumps you up!  And, you are done in 45 minutes…now that’s efficient!!!  Please make sure you speak to a physician before starting a workout while pregnant.

Maggie: You teach the early morning risers – what tunes get your heart pumping and feet flying?

Candee: I have always been known to be the “Rock” chick.  Yes, I still love my classic rock, but I have started to incorporate more Dance/Pop.  Especially at 5:45 and 6 am, when you need to keep the class awake first.  Sometimes I need to kick start a little energy with a great tune.  I get fired up and get my class follows suit.  I hope to inspire them to work as hard as they can and get as much as they can out of that 45 minutes.  A couple of my favorites are Rihanna, Pitbull, Linkin Park…If you want to hear the others then you need to set those alarms and next time instead of turning it off, get up and just go.  Your experience at Flywheel will be the best 45 minutes of your day.

Is a ‘babymoon’ getaway right for you?

The anticipated arrival of a new child is filled with many emotions about the present and the future. Anticipation of a completely altered lifestyle can take a toll on parents-to-be. What can any couple do to get out of a pre-parental funk? An ever-increasing amount of couples have come to the same simple solution: go on a babymoon.

Mom-to-be Kate Hudson in Mexico

What’s a babymoon?
Babymoons provide the perfect chance for expecting mothers to reconnect with their spouses. They are a chance to relax and celebrate their greatest life achievement: having and raising a child. Many people say that the babymoon trend began with celebrities like Britney Spears and Angelina Jolie. More recently, Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon enjoyed a babymoon at the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes, California and Kate Hudson and her boyfriend went on a luxurious vacation to the Four Seasons Resort in Punta Mita, Mexico. 59% of expecting couples now go on babymoon retreats (Babycenter.com). They provide the perfect chance for couples to relax and reconnect before the wonderful, perpetual journey and challenge that is having a child.

Isn’t a babymoon just a vacation?
Absolutely not! Although it might seem as though babymoons are nothing more than a typical getaway for a couple, the travel industry now specifically caters to expectant couples. Many hotels and resorts offer specific babymoon packages, which can include couples spa treatments, pregnancy body pillows in the room, late checkouts, room upgrades, breakfast in bed, keepsake gifts for couples, gift baskets filled with baby-related goodies, kitchens stocked to cater to even the most bizarre of cravings and much more (babymoonguide.com).

As an expecting mother, when is the best time to go on a babymoon?
In terms of when to travel, babymoons are most typically taken during the second trimester of pregnancy, between 18 and 24 weeks. This is usually the safest and most enjoyable time to travel for expecting mothers. They usually last around four days, although single-day babymoons are becoming increasingly popular.

I don’t have time to plan an entire vacation…
Not to worry! There are many websites like babymoonguide.com and babymoonfinder.com that are dedicated solely to helping couples create their perfect babymoon, so there does not need to be any stress in planning or finding the perfect place to stay. Babymoons can be taken literally anywhere worldwide, from Anguila and the Bahamas to Canada and Austria.

Why should I go?
Babymoons provide an invaluable opportunity for expectant couples to step back and appreciate each other and the enormity of upcoming events in their lives. Couples return from babymoons feeling rejuvenated and reconnected, and ready to take on the challenge of having a child. Why not try a babymoon yourself and get the rest and relaxation that you so deserve?

Am I getting too old?

Yes, I have an affinity for neon but I’m not sure if this qualifies as high fashion or steps away from the Sassy-Assy. Come on Miu Miu.
